WASHINGTON STREET TUNNEL
VICKSBURG, MS

CHALLENGE
The City of Vicksburg’s Washington Street Bridge abutments located at this Kansas City Southern rail crossing had experienced years of continual erosion and slope failures of the native loess soils bluffs causing the highway bridge to be condemned.

SOLUTION
The City of Vicksburg opted to demolish the existing bridge and replace it with a metal arch tunnel for the train traffic while supporting the new Washington Street roadway. Pinnacle Design/Build’s design team coordinated with the prime contractor and the project’s design engineers to design and build the 45ft tall headwalls and wingwalls.

VALUE
Pinnacle Design/Build engineered and constructed the crushed rock filled wire faced Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Retaining Wall over the active rail line resulting in time and money savings over the cost of a traditional retaining wall system.
